First of all, it is fun.  You never know what is going to happen.  And whatever does happen is a surprise to be enjoyed or learned from, or discarded as you do another.  
Whether you study calligraphy from the aspect of culture, history, philosophy, art, or personal discovery,  maybe just re-learning to play is the best.

And of course, the Japanese aesthetic has its own extraordinary, powerful beauty, and has percolated into western design everywhere in the modern world for good reason.
